5 things to look forward to: City v Newcastle

Melbourne City FC take on Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park on Sunday night. Ahead of the match, we take a look at the five things to look forward to.

Home sweet home

Following a difficult trip to the Sunshine State, City returns to Melbourne determined to bounce back to winning ways against Newcastle.

City hold a strong record against the Jets on home soil, losing just one of their past 10 games at AAMI Park. In front of their home fans, City have scored multiple goals in all but one of those matches.

Head Coach Warren Joyce and his team will be looking to extend that streak this Sunday night, so don’t miss the chance to get down to AAMI Park and support the team!

Sunday best

There’s something special about Sunday’s… City are undefeated in their last six fixtures played on a Sunday, including wins in their last three consecutive Sunday’s for a combined score of 10-1.

With that being said, Joyce’s team will be eager to extend their dominant run when City host Newcastle this weekend.

Excitement of youth

Against Brisbane Roar last Saturday night, exciting young prospect Ramy Najjarine made his debut in City blue.

Touted as a future star, the 18-year-old showed glimpses of his talent and potential during his second-half cameo.

Alongside teammates Lachlan Wales, Riley McGree and Nathaniel Atkinson, City have a core group of talented youngsters that have already demonstrated their fearless approach and attacking mindset.

Hot on their heels

Despite the disappointment of last weekend’s result, City remain hot on the heels of the top-four, just one-point behind both Sydney FC and Adelaide United, who sit in third and fourth position respectively.

Depending on other results, three-points on Sunday could see City finish the round in the top-four.

Head Coach Ernie Merrick’s Newcastle will be equally as determined to secure the points, as a win would see them close the gap on City. With the current league standings as close as they are, Sunday’s clash is shaping up to be a beauty.

Jets double

If history is anything to go by, we are set for an enthralling contest between two top-four contenders.

This may be the first time the two teams face off in the league this season, but City has already claimed one victory over the Jets this season, with a 1-0 win in the FFA Cup Round of 16 at AAMI Park.

With a strong record on home soil against their league counterparts, City will be looking to secure all three-points and return to winning ways.
