Spain’s all-time leading goal scorer David Villa will forever be etched in the memory of most Spaniard’s following his performance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

City stint

The star-striker joined Melbourne City FC during the 2014-15 Hyundai A-League season, following the announcement that he would be New York City FC’s inaugural player in the MLS. Although his stint in Melbourne was short, the world-class forward showcased his incredible footballing ability as well as his knack of finding the back of the net, registering two goals in four matches.

A nation’s hero

Villa has played a key role for the Spanish national team throughout his footballing career, featuring at three World Cup tournaments. The most impressive of those tournaments was his 2010 campaign, as he played a vital role in Spain claiming their first ever World Cup Championship win. Villa was named in the official team of the tournament and awarded the Silver Boot following his equal-tournament-high five goals (out of Spain’s eight for the tournament).

Spain will kick-off their tournament with a blockbuster Group B clash against reigning European Champions Portugal, before facing Iran and then Morocco to conclude their group stage.
