Melbourne City FC can announce defensive utility Osama Malik and attacking midfielder Nick Fitzgerald have signed with the Club, while midfielder Stefan Mauk has been released.

Malik, 25, and Fitzgerald, 23, represent the Club’s third and fourth acquisitions of the January transfer window, following the addition of midfielder Anthony Caceres and goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.

Malik is set to strengthen the team’s defensive line, with his ability to play along the back four as well as a holding midfielder, while Fitzgerald adds additional firepower in the team’s attacking third.

Head Coach John van’t Schip said the signings represent the strengthening of the first team squad.

“Our focus during this transfer period has been to further support our existing squad members and provide additional depth in key positions,” van’t Schip.

“We believe Osama and Nick add valuable experience, complement the squad and will be welcome additions.

“Meanwhile, Stefan has been a valuable contributor to the club and will pursue another opportunity, for which we wish him all the best.”

Mauk, 20, made 34 A-League appearances for the Club, scoring four goals.

Standing at 185cm, Malik made his first A-League appearance for North Queensland Fury before returning home to Adelaide, making 94 appearances for Adelaide United across five seasons.

Malik has signed for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign and through to the conclusion of the 2017/18 season. Fitzgerald joins the Club for the remainder of the 2015/16 season.

The attacking midfielder has made 93 appearances in the A-League for both the Mariners and Brisbane Roar, and has represented his country at Young Socceroo and Olyroo level.

Known for his tenacity and speed in attack, the 23-year-old is another versatile player added to van’t Schip’s roster, with the ability to play both in the centre of the park and out wide while also having a nose for goal.

Malik will wear the number 33 while Fitzgerald will don the number 27 with both players eligible for City’s Round 16 clash with Wellington Phoenix, this Monday 25 January 2016 at AAMI Park, kick-off 7:30pm.
