Melbourne City FC is delighted to announce the signing of Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams ahead the Westfield W-League 2016/17 season.
The 28-year-old arrived at the City Football Academy on Thursday following the conclusion of her National Womens Soccer League stint in the United States, where she played for Houston Dash.
City’s latest W-League signing was revealed live and exclusive on FOX SPORTS at Etihad Stadium, ahead of City’s A-League Melbourne Derby.
Williams joins City on a season-long loan from Houston, moving to Melbourne after six seasons with hometown club Canberra United in the Westfield W-League.
Regarded as one of the world’s best shot-stoppers, Williams brings with her a wealth of experience in Australian domestic women’s football, winning two W-League premierships and a championship title during her time in Canberra.
Williams made her debut for the senior Australian women’s national team at the age of 18 in 2006 and has since established herself as the Matildas first-choice goalkeeper with 57 international caps.
She played an integral role in Australia’s historic run to the Quarter Finals at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, starting in four matches and registering two clean sheets.
Williams produced a number of key saves to keep out powerhouse Brazil during a memorable 1-0 win in the Round of 16, helping the Matildas become the first Australian football team to win a knockout match at a World Cup tournament.
The goalkeeper was also a member of the Matildas squad which won the 2010 AFC Asian Cup and recently made her Olympic debut for Australia at Rio 2016.
Melbourne City W-League Head Coach Joe Montemurro was delighted to have secured the services of Williams ahead of the Club’s title defence.
“Lydia is an excellent goalkeeper and a fantastic addition to our squad. She has a lot of W-League and international experience and has great leadership qualities.
“She’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world and I am delighted to have her on board for our title defence this season.”
Williams’ arrival at City follows recent signings Teigen Allen and Jacinta Galabadaarachchi, and the re-signing of foundation players Steph Catley, Larissa Crummer, Rebekah Stott, Marianna Tabain, Amy Jackson, Olivia Ellis and Melina Ayres.
Williams will wear the number 1 jersey.
