Melbourne City FC W-League stars Jess Fishlock, Steph Catley and Lauren Barnes have been recognised for another history making season after being named in the PFA W-League Team of the Season for 2017/18.

Welsh international Fishlock and Matildas star Catley make their second appearance in the team after being named in the inaugural PFA W-League Team of the Season last year, while Barnes is included for the first time after enjoying another stellar season in the heart of defence for Patrick Kisnorbo’s side.

Fishlock enjoyed another prolific goal-scoring campaign from midfielder with seven goals, continuing her knack for scoring in important matches with crucial goals in the Semi Final and Grand Final to help City win a historic third consecutive championship.

Captain Catley was a marvel of consistency at left-back in her second season wearing the armband, forging a strong understanding with American centre-back Barnes, who reinforced her reputation as one of the competition’s premier defenders after picking up her second Championship medal in two seasons at the Club.

PFA President Alex Wilkinson said the players selected in the team emphasised the high quality and growing stature of the Westfield W-League.

“On behalf of the PFA Executive I would like to congratulate each of the players selected in the 2017/18 PFA W-League Team of the Season,” said Wilkinson.

“The reputation of the league continues to grow and we have seen that through the calibre of the players who have graced the field this season and also through the standard of the football that was played.

“All of the players who featured in the W-League this season should be commended for taking the women’s game in this country to another level and demonstrating its potential.”
