Colosimo: The Challenge Now Is To Back Up

Melbourne Heart FC Captain Simon Colosimo has emphasised the importance of his side backing up its stirring win over Adelaide United with another strong performance against Sydney FC this week.

Melbourne Heart FC Captain Simon Colosimo has emphasised the importance of his side backing up its stirring win over Adelaide United with another strong performance against Sydney FC this week.

After trailing for much of the second half in its match against the Reds on Friday night, Heart claimed a season boosting win courtesy of goals from Colosimo and Socceroo legend John Aloisi in the final five minutes of the contest.

But despite the significance of the result – it was Heart-s first win in four weeks – Colosimo says the Red and Whites must now focus its gaze keenly the next approaching target, Sydney FC on Thursday night.

“Playing away at Adelaide, we were always going to be up against it, so to score was great. But to pick up the three points was fantastic,” he told the Herald Sun.

“We’ve not been down on confidence about the way we’ve been playing, but more down on confidence about closing games out and finishing chances. But it’s pointless now to win last night if we don’t go on with it.”

Although Heart was on the back foot after falling behind to a Sergio van Dijk strike moments before half time, Colosimo refused to lose hope of claiming a result.

Colosimo added he was confident Heart would be able to close out the contest and secure all three points, should the side be able to pull level.

“Even with an hour played, I could sense they were sitting back and not attacking in numbers, so I tried to get it across to the boys that if we got one (goal) we were a huge chance,” he said.

“I didn’t realise it was the 89th minute and thought we had more time. But I just had it in my head if we got one, we’d get another.”

Heart return to the training paddock today in preparation for the side-s trip to Sydney, with the side flying north on Wednesday afternoon.
