Melbourne City’s E-League journey began with a tight 5-4 aggregate loss to Sydney FC on Tuesday night as the inaugural eSports competition kicked-off in the Harbour City.

City’s Marcus Gomes fought out a 1-1 draw in the first leg on the XBOX before Josh Wood came from 3-0 down at half time to bring it back to 3-3 before conceding in the 86th minute on the PS4.

It was tense opening match for Gomes who took on former pro Samar Elbadar as the City man found the back of the net just before the break. Sydney would have their equaliser only minutes after the interval as the clubs went in level after the first leg.

Wood’s clash with Mark Brijeski was by far the match of the round as the City underdog looked down the barrel of big first round loss against the number 1 Rest of World PlayStation player. His spirited second half comeback had the gamers backstage up and about before Brijeski secured the winner for his side.

City’s next clash is against Perth Glory on Thursday 22 February. You’ll be able to catch all the action on FOX Sports and Twitch.
