Reno Lia has been appointed coach of the Goulburn North East Football Association All Stars team that will take on A-League side Melbourne Heart in Shepparton later this month.

Shepparton South-s Regional Premier League coach, who won a premiership with Tatura two years ago before joining the Southerners this season, said he was proud of the appointment.

‘‘Having been out of the game for 12 months and coming back in and struggling with my own team, obviously something is going okay out there,– Lia said.

‘‘People are seeing what we-re trying to do and to tell you the truth I-m feeling pretty chuffed about it.

‘‘I look at the coaches that they-ve got out there and there-s some playing coaches that have played at a very high level in other parts of the world and to be able to mix it with them is pretty pleasing.–

Lia will be assisted by Tatura coach David Turkovic and Cobram coach Paul Amadei and the trio will put together a side to take on the Heart at McEwen Reserve on Thursday, July 25.

A list of names has already been put together and an initial squad of 24 players was expected to be finalised at a meeting last night.

That squad will train together, before being trimmed to a final team of 16 to 18 players.

It is not yet confirmed if the game will be played with an interchange or substitute system.

‘‘Our brief is to keep a number of young local players in the squad, which is what it-s all about,– Lia said.

‘‘Out of that final squad we will definitely start with what we think would be the best starting 11.

‘‘We-re certainly going for in-form players that suit the structure that we want to develop in this short period of time.–

Goulburn North East Football Association All Stars selectors have compiled a 29-man training squad to take on A-League side Melbourne Heart in Shepparton.

The list is made up of 15 VISA-rostered Regional Premier League players and 14 locals, including seven under the age of 23, and is expected to be trimmed to a final 18 ahead of the July 25 clash at McEwen Reserve.

Coaches Reno Lia, Paul Amadei and David Turkovic pieced together the squad on Monday night and Lia said it was picked to showcase the league-s bright talent and be competitive at the same time.

‘‘Even though it was a difficult process, we all seemed to be on the same page right from the start, which was really good,– Lia said.

‘‘We picked in-form players in that squad, plus some young boys that have impressed in certain games during the year.

‘‘We-re going to have at least six locals in that 18 and at least a couple of them have to satisfy an under-23 criteria, which is going to be exciting for a couple of young fellas.”

Shepparton United is the most represented club, with eight players in contention, while Cobram and Cobram Victory have five apiece.

Shepparton South has four players and Tatura and Shepparton three each…
