Fan Talk with The Punter – Edition #4

I find it rather ironic that the Emmy Awards were on over this weekend, as Round 4 of the A-League had more acting in it than a daytime soap.

Yes, I-m both shattered and bitter after Michael Baird-s application to join the Olympic Diving team through his triple-somersault with a half-pike resulted in a terrible call, a penalty and a draw against Perth Glory. But aren-t we all?

It was certainly a game of two halves. If anyone wanted to know the style of play JVS wants us to have, you needn-t look further than our first 45 minutes.

We dominated possession, were pressing well up the park and creating many opportunities to put the ball into the back of the net. Nick Kalmar, in particular, stood out with a brilliant display of athleticism, determination and discipline and was duly rewarded with a great goal in the 37th minute.

The second half, though, our style of play was different to the first 45 and there were times where we could have been more direct when we were closing on goal, but we lacked that edge from the first half to test Velaphi.

Simulation should be stamped out of the A-League and football in general. It is a blight on our sport, and I know a lot of my friends who are big AFL fans that like football a little, but don-t like the diving culture that has infiltrated the minds of some players.

This week we-ve got the high-flying North Queensland Fury at home, and it-s going to be a match that deserves a huge turnout. Those who went to the Perth match will attest to the fact that the atmosphere is phenomenal, and will only get better and better as time goes on.

So get down to the match this Saturday, and if you want to meet up with other fans before the match, come to the Imperial Hotel, on the corner of Bourke and Spring St and the home of each and every Melbourne Heart supporter, from 2pm onwards to get a taste of the pre-match atmosphere that will come with every home and away match!

Yours in support,
