FFA Cup Quarter Final: 5 things to look forward to

Thumbnail

FFA Cup action returns to AAMI Park, as we host Western Sydney Wanderers in the Quarter Finals on Wednesday 18 September. Ahead of the clash, we take a look at the five things we’re looking forward to.

The Magic of the Cup returns to Melbourne

City will be looking to keep their hopes of securing a second FFA Cup trophy alive when they return to AAMI Park to take on fellow Hyundai A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers on Wednesday night.

In their first competitive match at home this season, City will be eager to solidify a spot in the last four in front of the City faithful.

There’s no place like home, and with midweek knockout football on the horizon, City will be looking to set the tone at AAMI Park for the remainder of the season.

Knockout football

After two away trips, knockout football is back at AAMI Park!

The best thing about do-or-die football is that every moment counts, whether it’s the defender who beats his man, the player who wins the 50/50 ball or the striker who takes his one chance in front of goal.

We’re set for an enthralling contest between two Hyundai A-League sides who have impressed this pre-season, and with a place in the semi-finals on the line, the support of our home fans will make all the difference!

First impressions

Wednesday night’s Cup clash will be the first time Head Coach Erick Mombaerts and City’s new recruits take to the field at AAMI Park.

The likes of Craig Noone, Adrian Luna, Javier Cabrera and Joshua Brillante will play their first competitive fixture in front of the City faithful on home soil.

Eager to make a lasting first impression, City’s new recruits will be keen to impress our loyal supporters in their first showing at the venue.

Déjà vu

Our Quarter Final clash with the Wanderers will be the third time we face our A-League opponents in this stage of the competition at the same venue.

Drawing the Wanderers in the FFA Cup Quarter Finals in 2016 and 2018, Wednesday night’s clash sets up a Cup decider between the two teams.

City were 4-1 victors in their 2016 cup-winning run, before the Wanderers hit back last season, defeating the hosts 2-1.
