Melbourne Heart FC skipper Simon Colosimo says that reaching the finals next season is the clubs number one goal.

Speaking in a Live Q & A chat on Heart’s Facebook page this week, Colosimo said he wants a finals-spot sown up as quickly as possible.

The Red & White finished 8th in their debut season in the Hyundai A-League, but with a full pre-season and a number of new additions to the squad finals football is the ultimate goal for next season.

“We need to crawl before we walk, that means getting out there and cementing a finals spot as early as possible,” Colosimo said.

“Playing finals is definitely our number one priority on the field for next season.”

With the departure of Colosimo’s partner in the centre of defence, Michael Beauchamp, the skipper will have a new partner for the 2011/12 season.

When asked by a fan who would be his ideal partner for next season, Colosimo joked by saying the club should maybe get Ricardo Carvalho or John Terry.

“Thompson and I played together last season so that may be a possibility.” Colosimo said.

“But we also have some young guys coming through. I think Brendan Hamill is going to be a superstar. He’s a future Socceroo in the making, there’s no doubt.”

The Heart’s attack has been bolstered next season with the signing of a number of quality players including Fred, Mate Dugandzic and David Williams, but Colosimo thinks that the defence is something they really need to work on.

“I think our style and tactics were both excellent last season. We were very exciting going forward. We definitely engaged the supporters with our attacking style and flair.” Colosimo said.

“But one thing we need to do is bit a bit more resilient in defence, as a group, as a team, as a club.”
