Captain Fred says he will let his football do the talking on field during the upcoming Hyundai A-League season.

The Brazilian recruit is set to wear the armband this season after he was appointed captain by Head Coach John van ‘t Schip last week.

While admitting he was surprised by to be awarded the honour, Fred said he is looking forward to leading by example.

“I’m not the guy who always wants to speak to the referee. I’m more quiet. I like to speak to people one on one and help build guys up,” he said.

“I think the coach chose me because I set a good example at training and outside the field and I want everyone to be happy at training.

“In Brazil, after the coach, most of the responsibility goes with the captain, who then passes it on to the group, so it’s a good (job) to take on.”

Boasting a core of talented rising stars, Heart is set to be one of the teams to watch during the upcoming season, with Fred revealing he has been extremely impressed by the Club-s emerging players.

“There were a lot of young players at DC but they’re not as talented as the players here at Heart – they have great potential.”
