Franjic: We believe in our ability

City defender Ivan Franijc says his side will continue to focus on their strengths as they prepare for the final third of the Hyundai A-League regular season.

With 43 goals after 17 matches, City are on track to break the league’s season goals tally of 58 but Franjic believes goals are not the main focus of the side, saying three points every match is the goal.

“It’s been working for us and we’ve been getting results,” Franjic said.

“We’ve only lost two in the last ten matches so the results are coming and we’ll work hard every week to strengthen our weakness because there is always room for improvement.

“When something is working for us, why stop. We copped four on the weekend but we also scored three against the leading team so if we can rectify those little problems, it can be result in our favour. Sometimes you don’t always play the best but it’s important to get the result.

Reflecting on the performance in Parramatta, Franjic felt there were a lot of positives from the performance but says the Wanderers executed their game plan to a tee.

“It wasn’t a great result on Friday night but we’ve been working hard this week to rectify the problems and hopefully we can get a result this week,” he said.

“It wasn’t one of our best games. We were playing 3-5-2 and obviously changes before the game was difficult with a defence that hasn’t played together or trained together but hopefully this week we’ve had some more training minutes together and come Newcastle, we’re ready and we’re firing.

With nine matches to go in the regular season and City sitting in third position, Franjic still maintains that winning the Championship is the team’s main priority.

“From day one our intentions were to win the league and nothing has changed since then,” he said.

“We believe in ourselves and we believe in our ability especially when we are scoring 43 goals in 17 games so you can’t doubt the ability of us going all the way.”
