Following a sparkling debut in Red and White, Melbourne Heart FC Captain Fred said he was impressed with the standard of play upon his return to the Hyundai A-League.

The Brazilian was one of the standout performers in Heart-s scarcely deserved 2-3 loss at the hands of the Newcastle Jets in the Hunter Valley, justifying his status as a player to watch with a glittering display.

Fred-s penetrating runs from midfield caused significant consternation within the Jets defence, as the former DC United man produced an incisive through ball which should have resulted in a penalty before providing the killer cross from Mate Dugandzic-s second goal of the afternoon.

The 32-year-old enjoyed the helter skelter pace of the season opener, revealing the competition has improved substantially since he last graced the Hyundai A-League.

“I enjoyed my A-League return. I-m very excited to be back, and I think we did a great job today. I was still following the A-League while I was in America, and I feel it-s more competitive now, and much better to play in,” he said.

“I was comfortable out on the park, and we performed well with Williams, Mate and Maycon. I think we didn-t have luck today. It sometimes happens in soccer, so we need to keep our heads up and keep working.”

The team returns today to complete recovery in Melbourne before enjoying a deserved rest on Monday ahead of the Club-s opening home match of the season on October 16.
