Galekovic: Everyone is playing their role defensively

City gloveman Eugene Galekovic has praised his sides overall defensive attitude over the opening weeks of the season, believing the emphasis put on their game during the pre-season is bearing fruit.

City have conceded once in two matches this season but it’s the shots against that has Galekovic pleased the most, restricting Brisbane and Victory to only seven shots on target.

With his side tracking well so far, the early signs are positive for Galekovic and his side but says they won’t rest on their laurels.

“The boys are doing a great job,” Galekovic said.

“It’s not just the back four but it’s Ross [McCormack] and everyone else down to the back so everyone knows their roles.

“Players can play in different roles, Jakobsen can play everywhere defensively, Malik can do the same thing so there’s players that can do that which is good for us.

“We’ve put a real focus on our defensive side of things and in the last 5-6 games [including pre-season matches], we’ve conceded one goal. It’s working well but it’s still early days. We have six points but our aim is now to get nine points from the next game.”

That next game is Wellington at AAMI Park on Saturday afternoon and with two wins in the bank already, the keeper is wary of a Phoenix side that has impressed so far this season despite their results.

“Wellington look good. They were solid against Adelaide, they gave Sydney a fright and they probably could have snatched a draw.

“I think it’s a massive game. Our aim is to win and win all of our home games.

“We started off well, the aim is to get three on the trot. It’s important for all of our supporters to get down and support us, I think they have been tremendous so far and they will be important to help us get three more points.”
