City in the Community Program Coordinator George Halkias has been recognised by Vicsport and the State Government of Victoria for his Service to Victorian Community Sport and Recreation at the 2016 Victorian Sports Awards.

Halkias’ contribution to football has seen him involved in community sport and recreation for over 15 years, co-founding the Big Issue’s Street Soccer program and more recently being involved in the Club’s various community programs including City Strikers.

His role with Street Soccer also saw him take the first Australian team to the Homeless World Cup in Edinburgh in 2005 but Halkias’ main work has seen him impact the lives of thousands of people who may have not had the chance or been able to participate in sport, using football as the tool for physical and mental wellbeing.

On behalf at everyone at Melbourne City, we would like to congratulate George for the award and his contribution to sport in this state.
