Brendan Hamill has been rewarded for his break-out season with Melbourne Heart FC as he was named in the Young Socceroos squad for the FIFA U/20 World Cup in Colombia.

Hamill was selected in the 21-man squad after featuring for the side during recent training camps in Melbourne and Sydney.

Making his professional debut only last season as a 17-year-old, Hamill quickly impressed with his composure and physical presence, consolidating his reputation as a defender on the rise.

General Manager, Football Operations John Didulica congratulated Hamill on his achievement in earning selection for the Green and Gold.

“The Club is obviously delighted for Brendan and would like to wish him well as he represents the Young Socceroos and Melbourne Heart FC at the FIFA U/20 World Cup,” he said.

“Earning international selection for a major tournament is one of the greatest honours a footballer can receive, and is a credit to the strides Brendan has made over the last few months.”

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip said he is confident the experience will help accelerate Hamill-s development, with the side first heading to Colorado for a pre-tournament camp.

“There is still time for him to break through into the team and cement a starting spot. Even if he doesn-t start, in a tournament anything can happen so you never know when an opportunity may come up,” he said.

“Hopefully he can play and get the chance to play and improve his game. He just needs to be focused and train hard.”

Heart-s Ante Milicic will be another flying the flag for the Red and White in South America, with the rising tactician named as Assistant Coach to Versleijen for the second FIFA U/20 World Cup in succession.
