The impact of the Heart College of Football program on John Fawkner College students was evident when the school registered three wins from as many matches in the divisional playoffs of School Sport Victoria-s inter-school football competition in early May.

John Fawkner College students reaping the rewards of the Heart College of Football program

“I am really proud of the effort our boys put in. They were very disciplined and played a good brand of attacking football. I can really see the benefits of the Heart College of Football intensive training in their play,” Heart College of Football head coach and Melbourne Heart National Youth League coach, Joe Palatsides said.

School Sport Victoria-s inter-school football competition is an opportunity for all public schools to compete in a statewide football competition. John Fawkner College is using this opportunity to implement the skills learnt at Heart College of Football training, in a game situation.

“Previously, school soccer has been about achieving results,” Heart College of Football coordinator and John Fawkner College teacher, Kieran McDowell, said.

“With the shift towards playing a more attractive style of football, students were able to execute the skills that they have developed at training. The focus at training has been on ball speed, control and movement in game situations. This is very new to our school teams so it was very pleasing to have these skills clearly present during matches.”

Success in this competition now sees John Fawkner College intermediate team play off against other divisional finalists at the North Moreland regional finals.
