City trio Lachlan Wales, Nathaniel Atkinson and Riley McGree have been selected in the Australian U-23 side to head to Malaysia ahead of the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship Qualification matches against Cambodia, Chinese Taipei and Korea Republic.

The group will also be joined by loanee Denis Genreau – who plays in the Dutch Eredivisie with PEC Zwolle – in the 24-player side to compete in Group H of qualification from March 22 to 26.

The group will be lead by Socceroos Head Coach Graham Arnold who said the tour will be an important step towards qualification.

“While we are in Malaysia we will develop our key principles of play and focus on how we believe we can successfully navigate Group H and secure our place at next year’s AFC U-23 Championship in Thailand,” Arnold said.

Our three matches in Cambodia represent our first step on the path to next year’s Olympic Games, and everyone involved with our squad is eager to help Australia return to the men’s football tournament for the first time since Beijing in 2008.”

The City trio will miss our Round 22 clash with Sydney FC at Leichhardt Oval with the second week of the competition held during a FIFA international window.
