Key Battle: Maclaren v Fornaroli

Maclaren v Perth

Two of the A-League’s top strikers will be facing off on Sunday night when Melbourne City FC host Perth Glory as part of  a huge AAMI Park double header.

As per usual, Jamie Maclaren will be leading the line for City and at the other end of the pitch will be Bruno Fornaroli – a name very familiar to City fans.

Fornaroli played 73 matches for City from 2015 to 2018 and scored 51 goals in his time at the Club, also taking out the A-League Golden Boot in his first season.

Since joining City in early 2019, Jamie Maclaren has stepped into the empty shoes left by Fornaroli perfectly and has scored 33 times from 39 appearances for the Club.

Fornaroli has scored in all three of Perth’s fixtures so far this season while Maclaren has started a little slower, finding the back of the net once in City’s first three games.

Looking back at last season for a bigger sample size, Fornaroli appeared in all 28 of his teams fixtures and Maclaren appeared in 25 – missing a handful of matches due to Socceroos duty and an early season hamstring injury.

It was a stellar season for the City striker who bagged a total of 23 goals on his way to his second A-League Golden Boot. Fornaroli scored 13 goals in what was his first season at Perth.

Of Maclaren’s goals, 16 (including six penalties) came with his preferred right foot, four were on his opposite and the remaining three were headers.

Fornaroli scored 10 times with his right (including a free kick), twice with his left and once with a header.

Both players also are always also looking to set their teammates up with Fornaroli making 26 key passes for two assists while Maclaren played 17 key passes and was credited for four assists.
