Key Battle: Schenkeveld v Williams

Saturday night will see the attacking arsenal of both sides go head to head in what is set to be yet another epic Melbourne Derby.

It’s the men in charge of defending their goal however, that are often away from the spotlight and will be important in determining who come away with three points on Saturday night.

Both Bart Schenkeveld and Rhys Williams had the task of keeping two dangerous imports in Massimo Macarone and Bobo quiet in Round 1 and the central defenders did well in keeping them under wraps.

Williams was the busier of the two last Saturday, making eight defensive plays while Schenkeveld was efficient on Friday night, making three interceptions and one tackle which reflected City’s ability to strangle Brisbane’s midfield and restrict the service to their striker.

It will be the City man’s distribution and aerial threat in the forward half that may make the Dutch defender a match winner with Schenkeveld creating a chance from his front post flick and there will be no doubt he’ll be a target in the box during set pieces.

Both defenders will be tasked with big assignments yet again in Besart Berisha and Ross McCormack likely to line up in the number nine position for their respective sides and keeping those forwards under wraps will be the key to winning the contest.

City face Victory in the 23rd edition of the Melbourne Derby on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium, kick-off 7.50pm.
