Macca’s City Cup Finals Wrap

Melbourne City FC hosted the Macca’s City Cup Finals at the City Football Academy (CFA) in Melbourne on Tuesday 1 October and Wednesday 2 October.

In perfect Spring conditions, the Boys Finals were made up of four teams who won their respective group stages.

  • Group A winner: St Albans Dinamo
  • Group B winner: Green Gully SC
  • Group C winner: Caroline Spring George Cross
  • Group D winner: FC Bulleen Lions

Semi Final 1 saw St Albans Dinamo take on FC Bulleen Lions, with the Lions running out 2-1 winners. Bulleen opened the scoring before St Albans hit back with an equaliser in the second half, the Lions responded netting a late winner to secure their spot in the final.

Semi Final 2 was a more one-sided affair, as Caroline Spring George Cross ran out 6-1 winners over Green Gully SC.

All four teams enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of football played in great spirits. Senior players Nathaniel Atkinson, Denis Genreau and Joe Gauci made a special appearance, watching some of the football before running a Q&A session with the teams and signing autographs.

Grand Final

On Wednesday 2 October, the six finalists in the Girls competition competing for a spot in the Grand Final to be played at AAMI Park.

Two Elimination Finals kicked-off the day with BASL, Calder United, Glen Eira and Mount Martha Soccer Club fighting for a place to play Group A and B winners, FC Bulleen and Box Hill United.

Elimination Final 1 saw a dominant Calder United outfit defeat BASL 7-1. In Elimination Final 2, Glen Eira defeated Mount Martha 3-0.

With a spot in the final on the line, Semi Final 1 was a battle between two fierce competitors, FC Bulleen and Calder United. In a game that was separated by inches, the final whistle blew with the two teams locked at 1-1. The match headed for a tense penalty shootout, where Calder prevailed 4-5 to book their spot in the final, a tremendous display from both teams.

Semi Final 2 saw Box Hill United qualify for the final, after defeated Glen Eira 6-0 at CFA Melbourne.

Former Matildas champion and current Melbourne City goalkeeper, Melissa Barbieri made a guest appearance on the day. The experienced shot-stopper was a keen onlooker for both the Elimination Finals and Semi Finals, where she enjoyed a team chat with the participating teams.
