Match Preview: City v Adelaide

Melbourne City FC will be looking to record their second win of the season when they host Adelaide United at C.B. Smith Reserve on Saturday night.

City suffered their second consecutive defeat when they were beaten 5-2 by Perth Glory at nib Stadium in Round 4.

Perth took a 2-0 lead into the half-time interval following strikes from both Samantha Kerr and Rachel Hill in the opening 21 minutes. With a lot of work to do, City kicked-off the second-half determined to fight their way back into the match and it didn’t take long for the breakthrough to come, as Matildas star Elise Kellond-Knight found the back of the net with a delightful free-kick – her first goal for the Club.

Despite making it 2-1, City suffered a cruel blow three-minutes later as Kerr’s strike took a wicked deflection to make it 3-1 in favour of the hosts. Alyssa Mautz then made it 4-1, before Kellond-Knight sealed her brace to make it 4-2 with a composed finish from the penalty spot. In the fourth minute of additional time Mautz again found the back of the net, sealing her brace and the three-points for Perth.

The scoreboard may have read 5-2 after the match, but Head Coach Rado Vidosic’s team dominated possession and registered just as many shot on goal as their opponents. City will look for more efficiency and fluency in the attacking third on Saturday night, but it won’t be easy coming-up against an unbeaten Adelaide United side who are yet to concede a goal.

The Reds extended their unbeaten start to the season in Round 4, defeating Canberra United 2-0 at Coopers Stadium. Veronica Latsko opened the scoring for Adelaide, before Natasha Prior handed the hosts the three-points with an own goal.

With wins over Brisbane Roar and Canberra United, as well as a draw with Melbourne Victory, Adelaide enter the clash full of confidence.
