A-League Preview: Western United v City

The clash

City play their third game in eight days when they take on Western United for the very first time in Round 3 at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday.

Following a disappointing midweek result where they suffered a 4-0 loss to Adelaide United in the FFA Cup Final at Coopers Stadium, Head Coach Erick Mombaerts and his men will be eager to return to the winner’s list when they face new Victorian rivals Western United for the first time in the Hyundai A-League.

After two rounds, City sit undefeated in the league after playing out a 0-0 stalemate in Round 1’s Melbourne Derby before defeating Adelaide United 2-1 at AAMI Park last Sunday.

In-form attacker Jamie Maclaren will be looking to add to his league tally, after netting two goals in his first appearance for the season last week. The Socceroos international has had a prolific start to the campaign following a strong pre-season and will no doubt be eager to extend his goal scoring run.

City’s first trip to Geelong won’t be an easy one, with Western United putting on a strong display in their first A-League match at GMHBA Stadium in Round 2. Following a 1-0 win away at Wellington in Round 1, Mark Rudan’s men backed up their impressive performance with a 1-1 draw with Perth Glory last Saturday.

Greek attacker Panagiotis Kone opened the scoring in the 49th minute with an impressive strike, before Perth salvaged a late point when Kristian Popovic found the back of the net.

With both teams undefeated, we’re set for an intriguing battle at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday evening.
