Match Report: Newcastle 1-0 City

Melbourne City’s week in New South Wales ended with defeat on Sunday afternoon as they went down 1-0 to the Jets in Newcastle.

Starting XI

City made two changes to the team that ran out on Wednesday night with Portuguese Centre Back Nuno Reis making his debut, replacing the suspended Kerrin Stokes whilst Nathaniel Atkinson returned to the starting line up at the expense of Scott Galloway at right back.

What happened?

City played into a stiff breeze in the first half and made a decent fist of the first 20 minutes, with the boys in White and Red’s pressing game on point early.

Jamie Maclaren found himself through on goal in the early stages however couldn’t beat Jack Duncan in goal for the Jets.

Valentino Yuel found the net after 29 minutes for the home team however the linesman’s flag was raised for interference from Roy O’Donovan on Tom Glover, a ruling that ultimately VAR agreed with.

Just ten minutes later Yuel pounced on a rebound off the post and gave the Jets the lead before the halftime break.

The second half saw the Jets further cement their standing with the ball however the visitors were gifted a key chance as the half neared its end when Luna and Maclaren broke one on one with the keeper.

A monumental defensive effort from the Jets’ Angus Thurgate saw him cut the pass to Maclaren off and defend the Jets slender advantage, ultimately ensuring his team took all three points.

What’s next?

City will travel back to Melbourne ahead of another trip to NSW as we take on Western Sydney Wanderers this Saturday at Bankwest Stadium at 7.10pm.
