Melbourne City midfield starlets Stefan Mauk and Jacob Melling believe the squad’s midfield depth will pay dividends this weekend with marquee man Aaron Mooy in camp with the Socceroos.
The two have taken their opportunity to be a part of the starting lineup with both hands over recent weeks and believe that although the Socceroos star will be a loss to the side, the team knows his replacement will be more than able to fill the void.
“It’s still going to be a tough game even if Mooy isn’t playing,” Melling said.
“Even thought he’s not there, we still have a strong enough squad to get the three points. He’s definitely an asset to our team but I think with the other players that we have there, we are very capable of picking up the three points and doing the things we’ve been doing.
“It’s always hard to replace a player like him but I’m still very confident in the side we have.
“Our midfield is quite versatile and we have good enough players to come in when they’re not playing so it’s good to have the competition in the midfield and I think it’s important in keeping the squad strong.”
Mauk and Melling, both South Australians, got one up on their home state last Thursday night as they defeated Adelaide United 4-2 but as much as the win was important to the side, the focus was on Friday night’s clash with the Wanderers.
“We were all pretty excited getting the win,” Mauk said.
“It was important we bounced back after losing to Newcastle the week before but once we got the win on Thursday night, we just really focused on this week’s game.
“You always want to beat your home side so I guess it was good to get the result. The boys fought hard and we did well to get the result.”
Melbourne City take on Western Sydney Wanderers this Friday night at AAMI Park, kick-off 7:40pm.
