Melbourne City FC can announce midfielder Aaron Mooy has re-signed for the Club on a new three-year deal which will see him elevated to the marquee position for the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season.
Mooy, 24, was a standout for Melbourne City FC in his first campaign for the Club, topping the team’s goal-scoring charts with seven goals and eight assists in 27 matches.
Proving a vital and consistent contributor for John van’t Schip’s side, Mooy was instrumental in helping the team reach the A-League Semi-Finals last season.
The midfielder claimed a hat-trick of awards at the Club’s Player of the Year Awards night in May, where he was awarded the Golden Boot, Etihad Supporters’ Player of the Year and the Player of the Year.
A key to Melbourne City FC’s campaign last season, John van’t Schip moved to secure Mooy’s signature for the upcoming season and beyond.
“Aaron has demonstrated over the last 12 months his importance and value, not only to the team but also the Club,” van’t Schip said.
“He is an incredibly dedicated professional and has become a leader and role model for our younger players.
“We certainly see Aaron as being vital to our plans for the forthcoming season and beyond so we are very excited to have Aaron re-sign with the Club.
“I’m sure our fans and members will be very pleased with news.”
Mooy missed just two matches last season – both due to international duty when he was selected for the Socceroos – during a campaign in which he established himself as the team’s pre-eminent performer in midfield.
Mooy also finished the 2014/15 season leading a number of statistical categories across the competition; he led the league in balls into the penalty area, completed crosses, completed through balls and shot assists.
Defensively, Mooy was second in the competition for effective tackles, while he contributed to 47 per cent of City’s season goals.
The Sydney-born midfielder also topped the league in total crosses (250) and chances created (92), earning him widespread praise and Fox Sports’ Alex Tobin Award.
Mooy said he was extremely happy to pen a new deal with Melbourne City FC.
“I’m really excited to re-sign with City; I feel right at home at the Club and it’s a really exciting time to be here,” Mooy said.
“The Club is moving in the right direction and the players, coaching staff and the environment is one I really want to be involved in and a part of.
“I was really happy with my first season with the Club, but I want to help the team continue to build and progress further this season.”
Mooy has also confirmed he will wear the number 8 this season for Melbourne City FC.
