Melbourne’s New Heart Beats Red And White

The Hyundai A-League-s newest football team has announced it will be known as Melbourne Heart FC and wear ‘Red and White-, while unveiling its logo as preparations escalate for the club-s competition debut next season.

Nominated by 23-year-old Lee Warren Cafun, the title – Melbourne Heart FC – was one of four finalists in the ‘Name the Team- competition, and is set to etch the Moorabbin resident into Melbourne sporting folklore.

Cafun is an avid football supporter, and played the sport from the age of three in his native South Africa before moving to Australia, most recently representing Brighton FC.

The ‘Red and White- colour combination was derived from the official flag of Melbourne and selected following strong feedback, reinforcing the club-s desire to be truly representative of the city-s sporting public.

The colours have long been associated with some of the world-s iconic football clubs, including the likes of Ajax, River Plate, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Designed by international consultancy company Elmwood, the Melbourne Heart FC logo is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional heraldic shield, incorporating the clubs initials, M and H, within a subtle, stylised heart.

Melbourne Heart Chief Executive Officer Scott Munn said the selection of the club-s name and colours reflects the importance of the greater community in helping to develop the sport for future generations.

“Sport is an essential part of our city-s cultural fabric and helps bind our community in a very unique way. It essentially defines what it means to be Victorian, and we believe our name, Melbourne Heart, is representative of that,” he said.

The Heart-s inaugural Head Coach, John van ‘t Schip said: “The supporters having an opportunity to name their football team is very special. Melbourne Heart was a personal favourite of mine from early on, so I-m pleased that the supporters have gone this way.”

“Now this important step is in place, the club will continue to work hard to attract some great talent to Victoria so that we can build a competitive team and hopefully surprise a little when the A-League starts next season.”
