In Round 25, Newcastle Jets hosted Melbourne City FC in an Easter Sunday blockbuster at McDonald Jones Stadium.

It was a game in which City made a huge statement ahead of this season’s Finals Series with a comprehensive 3-0 victory away from home.

With Melbourne Victory hot on their heels, Warren Joyce’s men retained third position on the ladder with a clinical performance. Daniel Arzani dazzled on the wing as Bruno Fornaroli opened the scoring on the cusp of half-time from close range. Dario Vidosic produced a brilliant second-half brace to secure the three points with a towering header followed by a fierce dead ball strike.

Seven-goal thriller
Newcastle Jets 2 – 5 Melbourne City FC (30 December 2014, 2014-15 season)

When these two teams go head-to-head there’s generally very little shortage of attacking entertainment, and Round 13 of the 2014-15 season was no exception as City left Newcastle with all three points following a commanding 5-2 victory.  

The home side were dealt an early blow as Aaron Mooy put City ahead inside four minutes from the penalty spot. Five minutes later Robert Koren would double the visitors lead when he secured his first A-League goal, before Irishman Damien Duff followed suit.

City went into the half-time interval with a 3-0 lead, before Koren’s second-half brace secured his hat-trick. Edson Montano and Jeronimo Neumann both registered consolation goals for the Jets.

A lot of Heart
Melbourne Heart 3 – 3 Newcastle Jets (24 November 2012, 2012-13 season)

Round 8 of the 2012-13 season saw two teams desperate to return to winning ways play out an enthralling 3-3 draw at AAMI Park. 

Following a string of frustrating results, John Aloisi’s men started the match in the best possible fashion by taking a two-goal lead inside five minutes. Richard Garcia put the home side ahead in the opening minute, before Josip Tadic converted truly from the penalty spot.

Newcastle hit back in the 56th minute when Craig Goodwin found the back of the net, a goal that proved to spark an entertaining four-goal second-half that saw Heart hold on at home. Zadkovich equalised for the Jets in the 63rd minute, before Garcia looked to have secured his brace and the three points. It wasn’t to be for Heart, who were forced to share the spoils following an 87th minute equaliser by Ryan Griffiths.

The unstoppable duo
Newcastle Jets 0 – 4 Melbourne City FC (13 December 2015, 2015-16 season)

A brace each to Aaron Mooy and Bruno Fornaroli fired in-form Melbourne City to an emphatic 4-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium in Round 10 of the 2015-16 season.

City took a slender 1-0 advantage into the break as Mooy fired the visitors ahead on the cusp of half-time, before a six-minute blitz in the second period left the Jets stunned.

Fornaroli doubled City’s lead in the 56th minute, before Mooy extended the lead to 3-0 three minutes later following a delightful cross by Ivan Franjic. City’s prolific duo then combined to hand the away side a comprehensive 4-0 victory, as Mooy played a perfectly weighted ball through to Fornaroli who made no mistake with a clinical finish from inside the box.
