Postcard From Europe

Melbourne Heart Syndicate Head Coach John van ‘t Schip provides an update of the latest news from his scouting trip through Europe.

Dear all,

I have finally settled down in Europe to commence my scouting trip where I will be looking to find the best available talent and attempt to bring them “Down Under” to Australia and the A-League.

The experience has been an exciting one so far. I have spent a lot of time watching first division matches throughout Europe to assess the level of quality and scout for the type of player I believe will fit into my system.

As a coach, I understand the need to be flexible with the team-s style, but I believe a strong philosophical approach can build a culture of success for the club. That is why we need to commit to playing a mobile, technical, high-possession game that has been successful at some of the great clubs in Europe.

JOHAN CRUYFF

During my time here, I have also managed to catch up with Johan Cruyff. He is a great football thinker, and has been a huge influence on my playing and coaching career. His tactical approach deeply influences my own football outlook.

Johan is a person who has achieved great things in football. He was named European Footballer of the Year three times, has won the Champions League as a player and a coach and has played in a World Cup final in 1974, when he was named player of the tournament.

TALKING HIDDINK

Also in Holland, I was lucky enough to be a guest on one of the most watched football shows in the country. I was on the show with Guus Hiddink which was a great opportunity for both of us to discuss the positives of Australia and its football.

I was able to talk about the Melbourne Heart Syndicate and the fantastic football project I believe we are undertaking in Victoria. As a result of the show, many players and agents contacted me to ask about the Australian adventure so it was great to see the levels of interest that exist.

The players we have signed so far in Dean Heffernan, Kristian Sarkies and Matt Thompson will be fantastic additions to our squad, and provide a hint of the brand of football we hope to put on show.

NAMING COMPETITION

Finally, on behalf of the club, I would like to thank all those who entered the Melbourne Heart Syndicate-s ‘Name The Team- competition.

We hope to announce our name before Christmas, so keep an eye out in the Herald Sun and on our website – www.melbourneheartsyn.com – for an exclusive announcement

Thanks for your ongoing support and interest in the Melbourne Heart Syndicate.

Yours in football,

John van ‘t Schip
