Matt Thompson would become something of an unsung hero for the Heart. Fred might have drawn all the plaudits, but Thompson’s work was every bit as pivotal to the Heart’s fantastic run of form mid-season that essentially secured a first appearance in the finals for the Heart.

It would be fair to suggest that Matt Thompson-s second season with the Melbourne Heart did not get off to the best of starts. Played out of position due to injuries Thompson was put in a tough position in the second round when he was asked to stop probably the league-s best marksmen, Shane Smeltz. If that was the low point of Thompson-s season, it got much, much better as the year went on.
