Vice-Captain Matt Thompson says the team was heartened by its improved display during Saturday-s Melbourne Derby at Etihad Stadium.

Having featured as a central defender regularly over the last 12 months, the cross town clash saw Thompson revert to his customary midfield role, taking over the reigns as midfield fulcrum from Fred.

While the Socceroo was substituted during the latter part of the match, the influence of his injection into the midfield was plain to see as he thrived in the newfound freedom.

“There’s been a lot of talk lately about me playing out of position, but I really don’t think that’s the case. I enjoy every minute of playing at stopper,” he said.

“Of course if John wants me to play midfield, then I’m not going to say no. But it’s definitely a different feel and it’s great being on the other side of the pitch for a change.”

Despite the result, Thompson said the squad was buoyed by the improved display, stating it bode well for the future.

“A lot of the boys were happy with the performance just because of the way we’ve started the last couple of games,” he said.

“But to have a lot of possession and have a few chances. I guess we could look back on it now and think it would have been nice to get those three points. But it’s a good base. It is only early in the season and we can take a lot out of it.”
