In the lead up to Mother’s Day on Sunday 10 May, Melbourne City FC alongside partners, This Girl Can and Soccer Mums – initiatives of VicHealth – came together to take part in the Mother’s Day Classic Virtual 2020 event and raise vital funds for life-saving breast cancer research.

Staff, players and supporters were encouraged to join the team and walk or run between 4 to 8km in their local parks, on the running track or in the street ahead of Mother’s Day.

City stars Kyah Simon, Curtis Good and Melissa Barbieri joined the Club’s staff, representatives from This Girl Can and Soccer Mums, as well as fans to play their role, help raise funds and keep active.

With the goal of raising $5,000, City was able to raise over $8,000 for The National Breast Cancer Foundation while also supporting those who have been affected by breast cancer.

A special mention goes to Melissa Barbieri who in honour of her Zia Rita and with the generosity of others, raised over $2,300 including $500 from Club ambassador Craig Ondarchie.

Stefan Colakovski’s auntie, Lidija Karakolis, raised just under $1,500 – an incredible effort! The Mother’s Day Classic 2020 virtual event marked Lidija’s 10th year participating in the event and supporting a cause close to her heart after she lost her mum to breast cancer.

We would like to thank all our participants and everyone who donated for their generosity!

Every day, 53 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and eight women will lose their life to it.
