van’t Schip: Midfield battle the key

As Melbourne City FC prepares for the 17th edition of the Melbourne Derby, Head Coach John van’t Schip said his side must focus on their own game if they are to prevail on Saturday.

City come into the clash picking up an important point on the road against Sydney FC and the Dutchman is adamant his side can better that result at Etihad Stadium this weekend.

“We’ve been on the wrong side a few times in the last Derbies and we want to be on the right side this time,” van’t Schip said.

“We analysed some things already and know it’s a new season. We know Victory well, they are a good team and have some qualities we need to be aware of.

“We also need to make sure we are prepared for that and play our own game.”

van’t Schip sees the return of his marquee man Aaron Mooy for this week’s encounter. The midfielder trained fully this week and has recovered from his short Socceroos turn around, likely to replace Jason Trifiro in the starting eleven.

The inclusion of Mooy is an important addition to this week’s side with van’t Schip certain the midfield battle will be a be a key in his side’s success on the weekend.

“Every game is different, it’s going to be interesting because it’s a battle between our midfield and their midfield and I‘m very confident that we can give them a hard time.”

Melbourne City take on Melbourne Victory this Saturday night at Etihad Stadium. Kick-off 7:30pm.
