van’t Schip: “We have to stick together”

Melbourne City FC Head Coach John van’t Schip felt that his side are ready to stand up and deliver this Sunday in Wellington.

The side travel across the Tasman for Round 8 of the Hyundai A-League and the Dutchman feels the team have done everything they can to iron out the mistakes in their game.

“We talked about things we should improve,” van’t Schip said.

“We talked about the things we have to do better, [like] team discipline and possibly changing some players or how we approach the game and that’s something we’ll look at.”

Much like Melbourne City FC, the Phoenix have had a topsy-turvy start to the season, losing four of their opening seven matches, but van’t Schip reiterated the fact that in football and indeed the Hyundai A-League, things can change substantially when a team is on a roll.

“We show that it’s very close in football, it can turn around very quickly,” van’t Schip said.

“Look at Perth now, they’re flying. We know pre-season doesn’t say anything but we thought they were struggling.

“They’ve had a good start, they have lost only one game and they are full of confidence and that’s how it works.

“If you come into a good spell of games, the confidence grows, the team starts gelling and the best medicine is results and results will help you in everything.”

van’t Schip outlined that the fundamentals of the side would not change but hinted at tinkering with his line upon Sunday.

“We have to stick together and keep on working on what we are doing because I strongly believe that,” van’t Schip said.

“We have to analyse where we have to adjust sometimes and that’s only good because if the results are not coming, you have to change things for it to go the right way.”

Melbourne City FC will look to get back into the winner’s circle when they face the Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand this Sunday, kick-off 3pm Melbourne time.
