W-League Preview: Canberra v City

Rhali v canberra

The clash

Melbourne City FC will be back in action in the Westfield W-League on Sunday afternoon when it takes on Canberra United.

City started it season with an important draw to Brisbane away from home in what was a hard-fought contest in hot and humid conditions.

Rado Vidosic’s starting XI had three W-League debutants and a further five who were playing their first game for the Club.

Teagan Micah was immense in goal in her first game in a City shirt and made seven saves to earn herself player of the match honours.

In the absence of Emma Checker, Jenna McCormick took the armband and was impressive in her first match for the Club, along with her partner in central defence 19-year-old Tori Tumeth.

Unlike City’s season opener, Canberra saw plenty of goals in its first game of the season which ended in a 4-3 win against Adelaide.

Three goals were scored in stoppage time in what was a crazy finish.

Former Matilda Michelle Heyman lead the way for Canberra, netting a hattrick in the win.

These teams last met in round 8 last year and it was City who came away with a 4-0 win thanks to a Kyah Simon brace and goals to Clare Emslie and Emily van Egmond.

“Two away trips to start the season helps us to spend more time together and bond together. To wake up and go to breakfast, spend all day together and fly together is very helpful because a lot of these girls have never played together before.”
