The clash

Melbourne City FC open their Westfield W-League 2019/20 season when they head to Newcastle to take on the Jets at No.2 Sportsground on Sunday afternoon.

Head Coach Rado Vidosic and his squad will be eager to open their season with a win over the Jets as they set their sights on a return to playing finals football.

City’s squad has been bolstered by a number of key signings in the offseason, including Scottish international attacker Claire Emslie, Serbian international Milica Mijatovic and Westfield Matildas trio Ellie Carpenter, Emily van Egmond and Emma Checker.

It’ll be a special game for van Egmond, who is set to face her former side in her first official hit out in City colours.

After a poor start to their 2018/19 season, City will be eager to kick-off the season in the best way possible. Although, the task won’t be easy facing a Jets outfit who will be eager to spoil the party as their former leader returns to her old stomping ground.

With back-to-back trips on the road to open the season, Vidosic’s side face a tough task, but a challenge that could propel them and hold them in good stead for the remainder of the season.

Last time they met

The last time the two teams met was in Round 12 last season, when Vidosic’s squad produced a convincing display to run out 4-0 winners at CB Smith Reserve.

Yukari Kinga led the scoreboard with a brace as City captain Steph Catley and American import Hailie Mace also found the back of the net.
