W-League Preview: Sydney v City

The clash

Melbourne City will be vying for their third consecutive win when they travel to Sydney to take on the Sky Blues on Sunday afternoon.

City recorded their second win of the season in Round 3 to extend their unbeaten run to three games when they overcame a resilient Adelaide United outfit to win 1-0 at John McEwan Reserve in Shepparton.

Kyah Simon netted the match-winner after combining with Ellie Carpenter following Rebekah Stott’s defence-splitting run. The experienced Matildas international made no mistake, sliding the ball into the back of the net.

Despite City’s impressive start to the season, they face a tough task in Round 4, taking on reigning champions and ladder leaders, Sydney FC.

The Sky Blues have won each of their opening three fixtures, scoring seven goals and conceding one goal in that time.

Sydney have defeated Melbourne Victory, Adelaide United and Perth Glory, sending an early warning sign to the competition.

If recent history is anything to go by, we’re set for the match of the round on Sunday.

Last time they met

The last time the two teams met was in Round 14 last season, as City produced an emphatic performance at WIN Stadium to defeat the Sky Blues 2-0 in front of 1,415 spectators.

Helen Caceres and Tameka Yallop found the back of the net last time out.

What was said

Melbourne City attacker Kyah Simon

“They’re always a tough opponent to play against, it’s going to be a tough battle but one I’m really looking forward to.

Not making the top four last season wasn’t good enough, and we know how important these early fixtures are.”
