Melbourne City will be on the hunt for its first win of the Foxtel Y-League season on Saturday morning when it takes on Adelaide United away from home.
Having sat out of Round 1 due to a bye, City has drawn in first two games of the season, in fixtures that were polar opposites.
City opened its campaign with an entertaining 6-6 draw against Perth Glory, having led 6-3 in the second half.
Raphael Borges Rodrigues scored a double and Moudi Najjar, Kerrin Stokes, Stefan Colakovski and Jordi Valadon all joined him on the scoresheet.
Last week’s clash against Brisbane Roar could not have been more different with the two teams playing out a scoreless draw in Shepparton.
Both teams had opportunities to score, with Najjar and Ramy Najjarine having the best of City’s opportunities, but the defenders of both teams put in strong shifts and were the stars of the day.
Najjar looked to have won the game in injury time, expertly dispatching a Valadon cross into the back of the net but the linesman’s flag was raised and the game finished goalless.
Adelaide United has gotten off to an up and down start, having won its first fixture but lost its second.
Carlo Armiento scored a double and Zayd Farah scored from the spot in a 3-0 win over Perth to open their season.
The Reds weren’t as successful the next week, going down 1-0 at home to Melbourne Victory before having a bye last weekend.
The most recent matchup between teams saw City come out on top 2-1 in Adelaide.
United had hit the front inside three minutes but Dario Vidosic equalised less than 15 minutes later before Dylan Pierias scored the winner late in the second half.
City also won the fixture against Adelaide at home 3-2 earlier last season, despite having gone down 2-0 in the first half.
Pierias responded before half time and Colakovski and Najjar both scored in the second half to complete the comeback and win the three points.
