Y-League Preview: Victory v City

Thumbnail

With just two games to go in this Y-League season, Saturday will be the last chance to see City play in Melbourne when it takes on Victory in the youth derby.

While City has only suffered two losses in its six games so far, it is still yet to record a win with the other four fixtures all ending in draws.

This was the case last round against Adelaide at CB Smith Reserve in a game where City’s average age was just over 17 with the Reds also fielding a very young team.

Chances were hard to come by with both goalkeepers enjoying relatively easy days in the scoreless draw.

City keeper Joe Gauci was called into action twice in the eighth minute and pulled off a pair of strong reflex saves.

It took until the 88th minute before City were able to seriously test United keeper Cameron Cook.

Samuel Morrison pulled off a sharp turn inside the penalty box before firing a powerful shot towards that top corner which was brilliantly saved by Cook to ensure the points would be shared.

Victory has been able to find more success than their cross-town rival this season, sitting in second place of conference A.

They sit just one point behind Brisbane who has bye in the last round of the season so a win this weekend for Victory will give them the chance to finish atop of the table.

This just places even more on the line in what was already going to be a hotly contested derby with City eager to score its first win of the season and get some payback from the last fixture between teams which was just under a month ago.

Victory’s Lleyton Brooks opened scoring in just the second minute, but it was quickly cancelled out by Moudi Najjar.

Victory scored once more in either half to run out 3-1 winners and claim the derby bragging rights.

With a number of first team players away on U-23 international duty, expect City to again field a very young team this weekend with some regular Y-League players being called up to the first team for this weekend’s away trip to Brisbane.
